Welcome to the official website of leading Racehorse Trainer Richard Lee. Based in the rolling countryside of North Herefordshire Richard has held a full dual purpose licence since 1986 and counts the Coral Welsh National together with the Grand Annual, Mildmay Of Flete Chases and Aintree's Martell Cup among his many big race wins.

A specialist stable of over 30 horses Richard is a renowned authority on the subject of 'bleeders' - EIPH (Equine Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhaging),
and also enjoys an enviable reputation curing horses afflicted by chronic leg problems

What was your childhood ambition?
To be a jockey

Is it true that your first job was as a trainee auctioneer? Yes - my parents wanted me to be respectable but I was only interested in being a jockey - I have ended being neither a jockey or respectable.

Who inspired you?
The late Fred Winter

How many winners did you ride?
Not as many as my wife Carol

To which well-known jockey did you or do you most compare? John Francome - I'm sure he modelled his style on mine!

What is your idea of a good night out?
Dinner with family and friends - preferably in Dusters, Salcombe

Who is the funniest person you know?
My son Tom

To which TV character do you most aliken?
Pop Larkin - The Darling Buds of May

How would you describe your personality?
Sunny, gracious and forgiving

 

How would your wife Carol describe your personality?
I was once quoted in the Racing Post as 'spending more time feeling Delius' legs than Carol's'. That's a fair representation.

Do you have any nicknames?
My children call me Grizzly (as in bear)

Do you deserve them?
Definitely not (grr)!

Who or what do you fear?
Not training a winner for a whole season

What are you most proud of?
My children Kerry and Tom





Are you fashionable?
Very, I use all the best jockeys

Do you keep fit?
Yes, I ride out regularly

Two people you'd like to take to dinner and why?
Catherine Zeta-Jones - because I fancy her
Michael Douglas - because hopefully he'd pay

What is your most likely alternative career?
Nuclear scientist or a male model

What do you take pride in?
Training winners

What makes you jealous?
Other people training winners

Nothing

Shining Moon - my latest boat

When are you at your laziest?
When I'm allowed - not very often!
